STAGE THREE: Scene Study II
CHARACTER TRANSFORMATION

COURSE CONTENT
In the first half of this course we will focus on the Psycho-Physical Transformation into Character. Working with professional Acting, Voice, and Movement professionals, the work in this stage will provide the professional actor an opportunity to address the kind of acting, physical, and vocal adjustments necessary to fully embody whatever character you play. We will also address the interconnection between these acting, vocal, and physical changes within the character’s psychological profile dealt with in STAGE TWO.
We will accomplish this by helping you to:
- Develop and Implement the Character Adjustment Sheet. This allows the professional actor easy access to compare their own personal physical and vocal qualities with the physical and vocal qualities of the character. This information can be used by the professional actor as a launchpad to determine what appropriate physical and vocal adjustments need to be made.
- Finding the essence of the character, physically and vocally, through the Psychological Gesture.
- Activate the character's physical and vocal transparency, both verbally and non-verbally, to reveal the character's opinion in the given moment.
- Use various physical & vocal exercises and improvisations to help the professional actor make the kind of committed physical and/or vocal adjustments necessary to fully embody and distinguish the character.
In the second half of this course, we will focus on the Psycho-Physical Transformation of Character that leads to what Jeff Zinn describes as the surrender into character. We will explore the high-stakes climactic/cathartic moments in the scene when the character breaks free of their previous patterns of behaviour to act in a revolutionary or unexpected way. It is a process of inspired alchemy leading to a change of state that takes place within both the actor and the character. This change of state is often sparked by the impact of monumental discoveries & decisions that register within the character and are transparently expressed via the character’s face, body, and voice.
We will accomplish this by helping you to:
- Courageously and urgently pursue your Scene Task within the Critical Circumstances of a climactic Scene
- Courageously surrender fully to the emotional life of the character by allowing yourself to play the most vulnerable moments of the character without inhibition.
- Courageously employ Stella Adler’s, Big Idea: the concept of lifting yourself to the level of the character rather than bringing the character down to you.
- Courageously learn how to ride the wave of the scene by allowing the Dramatic Tension to impulsively build, ebb, and flow as the given circumstances dictate.
- Courageously integrate
Immediate Acting Technique with your own acting instincts and personal way of working, creating a practical methodology that becomes distinctly your own.
