SB ACTING STUDIO: WHO ARE WE?

SB Acting Studio is an acting studio uniquely designed for professional actors only. We offer high-quality, intensive actor training catering to the specific needs of professionals. We are dedicated to serving both emerging and seasoned professional actors who seek to grow and improve their craft, helping them gain access to a variety of practical, effective, and time-efficient solutions to 21st century acting problems. By providing professional actors the opportunity to incorporate new techniques with what they already know about acting, they are able to make their best, better.

WHAT MAKES SB ACTING STUDIO UNIQUE?

1.    Our courses offer the professional actor a unique opportunity to create a character through a concise but comprehensive process we call Immediate Acting. This process allows the actor to employ technique across the board: from first casting to final performance. Combining this technique with their own instincts, the professional actor can confidently make the best choices possible for the character.

2.   Our courses are built on the principle of providing the professional actor with the skills necessary to maintain a sustaining career in the performing arts industry. Skills that support the professional actor not matter what aspect of acting they engage in.

3.    Our teaching philosophy is to encourage the professional actor to approach their learning from the Zen concept of “always a beginner” as they view each acting experience “as if for the first time.” This allows the actor to engage positively with the work with a higher degree of commitment and enjoyment as they embark on creating characters of originality and distinction.

4.    We also understand the need for flexibility as actors often secure acting work with short notice. We will do what we can to accommodate your work schedule within our structure of tutorials and classes.

5.    Our courses are a unique combination of both online and live, in-person classes with an emphasis on small group and/or individual tutoring. This gives the professional actor the most flexible, efficient, and effective way to learn.

6.    Our founder, Stephen C Buckwald, is one of the most experienced acting teachers in the UK. He has taught acting technique for over 40 years in the UK, USA, and Europe with a strong track record of working with several highly successful professional actors currently working in the performing arts industry. This level of experience allows him to bring a unique perspective on the acting process. His Immediate Acting Technique incorporates a variety of insightful and innovative approaches to character preparation and performance.

THE ACTOR'S PROCESS: IMMEDIATE ACTING TECHNIQUE

The Actor's Process is delivered in three Stages. These Stages can be taken separately, or in sequential combination with each other.

STAGE ONE: The Meisner Intensive Workshop

Delivered Live & In-Person Only

This first stage of the Actor's Process Course, is a stand-alone full-time 6-day Intensive Workshop designed to help the professional actor divest themselves of editors, allowing them to freely connect to the emotional life of the character. Actors accomplish this through a process of “active listening” followed by a “spontaneous and justifiable response.” Our next Meisner Intensive Workshop will run daily from Monday, 16 through 21 September 2024. STAGE TWO: Scene Study I - Character Action into Transaction

Delivered through a combination of online lecture presentations, Q&A small class sessions, and 1-to-1 tutorials, along with live & in-person intensive workshops.

This ten-week course focuses on helping professional actors create the most distinctive and compelling characters possible through the Immediate Acting Technique. This technique is a hybrid of the very best aspects of 20th and 21st century acting methods developed by our founder, Stephen C. Buckwald. This course will help participants develop and deepen their skills in Researching, Analysing, and Performing characters that will both challenge and stretch their acting abilities. STAGE THREE: Scene Study II - Character Transformation

Delivered through a combination of online lecture presentations, Q&A small class sessions, and 1-to-1 tutorials, along with live & in-person intensive workshops.

This advanced ten-week course continues the work started in Stage One & Two. In this course, professional actors will have the opportunity to connect and transform into the Shape of the character through distinct physical & vocal adjustments, explore issues of stillness and immediacy through Stanislavski's later work on the Method of Physical Actions, and finally, find new and authentic ways to "hit the high-notes" as they release fully into the emotional life of the character. The Actor’s Clinic (formerly The Actor's Gym)

Delivered either Online or In-Person

HOW MUCH DO OUR COURSES AND COACHING SESSIONS COST?

SPECIAL NOTE: Our rates are competitively priced and there is a 10% discount for Equity actors. In addition, we offer a free one-hour Actor's Clinic session to any actor who enrols in either our Stage One: Meisner Intensive Workshop course, or our Stage Two: Scene Study I Course. Finally, we offer £10 discount finders fee to anyone you recommend that signs up for either stage of the Actor's Process.
